The Korean proxy war arose from the division of Korea after World War II in June 1950 and continued until July 1953. By July 1950 the United States had entered the war in favour of South Korea because they had seen it as a war against the beliefs of communism. The Soviet Union entered the war in favour of North Korea. The U.S.A kept helping fight the Korean war because they felt if they let South Korea down, then The Soviets would win and keep gaining control over more and more countries. There was a period of two year of negotiation, and although the Korean War was short there were many casualties. Nearly five million people died, over half of the casualties were innocent civilians, 40,000 American soldiers died while fighting for the war, and many more were severely injured.
